In New Jersey, the first money after a Trenton car accident comes from your own PIP, which covers treatment whoever was at fault. A claim against the other driver covers what PIP leaves out. Top USA Law represents Trenton crash victims by phone, video, at home or at the hospital. Call (877) 411-5291.
Trenton is the state capital and a city much of Mercer County drives through rather than to, and that shows in the crash reports. Route 1, the Trenton Freeway, cuts across the city with tight ramps and short merges, and drivers coming off it onto Olden Avenue or Brunswick Avenue are still carrying highway speed at the first light. Route 29 runs along the river, and its curves and the Route 129 connection catch drivers going too fast for the road.
On the city grid, Hamilton Avenue and South Broad Street carry buses, delivery trucks and commuters through neighborhoods where people walk to work, to school and to the corner store. Cars parked on both sides narrow the sightlines, and a driver rolling a stop sign hits a pedestrian or a car crossing the intersection. Olden Avenue on the north end is lined with businesses and driveways, and left turns out of them across two lanes cause the angle crashes we see most often.
The Trenton Transit Center pulls NJ Transit buses and the River Line into one crowded block on the east side, and the streets around it are where bus, bicycle and pedestrian crashes happen.
Capital Health Regional Medical Center on Brunswick Avenue is Trenton's Level II trauma center, where the ambulance goes with serious injuries from Route 1, Route 29 and the city streets. Keep your discharge summary and every follow up appointment, because a gap in treatment is the first thing the insurer uses to argue you were not hurt. If the pain arrived the next day, get seen then and say it followed the crash. Trenton Police write the report for city streets; the New Jersey State Police cover I-295.
Under N.J.S.A. 39:6A-4, your own PIP coverage pays your medical bills no matter who caused the crash, up to your policy limit, and if you have no policy the coverage on the car you were riding in is usually next. Pain and suffering is a separate question under N.J.S.A. 39:6A-8. With the limitation on lawsuit option, the verbal threshold, you need a displaced fracture, loss of a body part, significant scarring or disfigurement, a permanent injury confirmed by objective medical evidence, or death. With the unlimited option there is no threshold. We read the declarations page.
A Trenton crash lawsuit is filed in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Law Division, Mercer County, at the Mercer County Civil Courthouse on South Broad Street, and N.J.S.A. 2A:14-2 gives you two years from the date of the crash to file. Trenton is full of public vehicles: NJ Transit buses, state fleet cars, county trucks, city police and fire units. If one was involved, the Tort Claims Act, N.J.S.A. 59:8-8, requires a written notice of claim within 90 days, and missing it can end the claim no matter how strong it is.

If a bus, state vehicle or city truck was involved, the 90 day notice goes out first. The New Jersey car accident lawyer page explains the state rules, or call (877) 411-5291.
